After having spoken with several people the past few days that honestly believe that GIS is no longer necessary since the advent of Google Earth, perhaps reading and writing KML would be prudent. Not because the perception is true of course, rather because the perception may well increase the amount of data kept and distributed in that format substantially.

Google has just included a search feature for KML/KMZ files out there on the internet in their new version of Google Earth with plans to extend to the Google Maps website. You can read about it here: [url]http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9011344&source=NLT_AM&nlid=1

I think that ups the ante significantly for KML/KMZ support.
