Hi KMorris,
a) Start editing your polygon layer
b) Open the attribute table
c) Right click on the column you want the area to be stored in and pick calculate from the drop down list
d) Double click on Area in the function list
e) Double click on FID in the fields list
The formulae reads Area([FID])
f) Pick all or selected records
g) Press compute
h) Save edits
Btw you can create a new field via the table design form (Right click on layer and pick table design from drop down). Please note you need to be in edit mode for the option to be available.
