While working with different shapefiles, in paticular, ones that i had just created... i get an error that says "Failed to delete W:\...." with the "...." being the rest of that shapefiles path.
i hit OK and the error window goes away, but all of the features have been deleted.
and i hadnt been trying to delete anything. The last time i re-created this error, i had just drawn three polygons and Unioned them.
Im not sure what causes this...i dont think i was doing the same thing each time ive gotten this error...but its really quite a pain, especially after i have 15 or 20 objects.
ive been able to re-create this 3 times in a row now.

Ok, this time after i hit ok, i went back and tried to edit that same layer and it wouldnt work. The Add Feature button worked as if it was the Pan tool, so i canceled edits and started editing again. No matter what i tried to do this time; Add Feature, Move Feature, or Delete Feature, i would click on the screen and it would refresh real quick and come back with no change. So i canceled edits, hit Start Editing again, and that brought up this error message: "Unable to enter edit mode. Please ensure that all relevant files are not read-only and are not open in another application.
Please note that only 2 dimensional point, line and polygon editing are supported at this time."
they arent read-only files, and AccuGlobe is the only application i have open.

after trying to recreate this error a few times, which i was able to do each time, i stopped trying to recreate it, and realized that its coming up every single time i make a new layer and try to add features in this same project.
not cool
I have to create a new project in order to be able to create a new layer and edit it without having this series of problems.
But again, after a few new features, the process starts over again.

Hi JBrown,
Looks like a file security issue based on I get an error that says "Failed to delete W:\...." with the "...." being the rest of that shapefiles path.
I suggest trying to create a new shapefile on your local drive to see if this happens again.

Dave,
you were right...so far i havent had any problems with the shapefiles ive created on my C drive
Does this mean theres no way for me to keep shapefiles on the network?
We want to be able to have multiple people be able to work on the same shapefile from different computers.

Hi JBrown,
I have yet to experience any problems editing shapefiles over a network. You may want to talk to your IT support personnel as it appears to be a security issue. Do you have the same problem with MS Word?

Dave,
Neither IT guy can figure out the problem...
Is there anything else you can think of that i could look into?
Thanks again, Justin

JBrown,
Perhaps it would help if we could be more detailed.
Try this: a) Start 2007 b) Create a new layer with a single attribute and save this to the server c) In Windows Explorer browse to these files and ensure that these files do exist d) Back in 2007 start editing e) Add a single feature with attribute f) Commit edits *) Loop through d) e) and f) until the error appears and go to 1)
1) Hit cancel 2) Hit start editing 3) Hit commit editing - is the error message intermittent?
-
On a side note the only way we can reproduce your error message if a) In AccuGlobe 2007 hit start editing b) Through windows explorer make the files read-only (shp, shx, dbf). c) In AccuGlobe 2007 hit commit editing
Perhaps anti-virus software is marking the files read-only when it checks them?

- i got through F and upon drawing my fifth triangle polygon with "blank" in the attribute table for each one, i got my --------------- Error saving file Failed to delete W:\..... --------------- there is no Cancel button as you suggested in #1, just "OK" which i hit, and it returned me to my project with nothing in it (all the polygons have been deleted)
I checked the files prior to drawing anything, and none were Read-Only I also checked them after the second polygon, and after recieving the error... They were never Read-Only
Just to follow through with the process again, I hit Start Editing, Add Feature, and it wont draw anything. I dont have my aerial photography loaded as i have before, but Im assuming, like usual, the Add Feature Button is now acting as the Pan tool when i try to draw. I hit Cancel Edits, and say OK, im willing to lose my changes
Then Start Editing again and i get: --------------------------- Unable to enter edit mode. Please ensure that all relevant files are not read-only and are not open in another application.
Please note that only 2 dimensional point, line and polygon editing are supported at this time. ----------------------------
I check again, and the files are still not Read Only
And from now on, i get that same message every time i hit Start Editing

JBrown,
Ive modified the delete function to display the reason file deletion fails (this will be in addition to the existing messagebox).
Ill push out a new build later today (Ill post here to confirm that it has been posted).

> The process cannot access the file ‘W:\AccuGlobe\delete\Alabama.shx’ because it is being used by another process.
It would appear that another process is using .shx so AccuGlobe 2007 can not delete the file. I thought that this might be the reason and so thought it could be anti-virus.

Couple questions Dave,
I turned off the anti-virus software and still got the same error. Is that what you were suggesting i did?...simply turning off the anti-virus software?
Why is AccuGlobe trying to delete something? Or is that not actually how it sounds?
What should i try now?
-note- IT guys still cant help me

I dont think its as simple as that. The file resides on a server and most likely the file server itself has anti-virus software.
What is happening is that AccuGlobe 2007 is saving your new shp, shx and dbf in your temporary folder, renaming your existing files to be <what_it_was_called>bk.shp and then moving from the temp folder to replace the original. AccuGlobe is trying to delete the files as the rename failed so that it can replace them with the new files.
> The process cannot access the file ‘W:\AccuGlobe\delete\Alabama.shx’ because it is being used by another process.
Any program could have gotten a hold of this file... i thought it was most likely to be anti-virus.

For the time being i suggest that if you are creating/modifying files do this on your local machine... then upload them to the server for sharing (read only).

Does the problem always happen fairly soon after you create the file? Could it be that your network is running some type of automatic backup (such as volume shadow copy, etc) and watching for the creation of new files so that they can be backed up? I cannot re-create this problem on my network.
The only other thing I can think of is that you have somehow attracted the attention of extra-terrestrials who are watching your every move or that you have a boss that has re-defined "micro" management :-)

Ben, It varies. My method of getting the error to come up has stayed the same. I create the shapefile, draw a triangle, save edits, and repeat.
Sometimes it takes 2 triangles before the error comes up and sometimes it takes 13 (random numbers...but it varies). Now that only usually takes a minute or so...so i guess in realative terms, it usually happens pretty quick.
-I just decided to experiment with what you said though. I planned on making one triangle, waiting a few minutes and making another one...but the error is coming up immediatly...
But, IT says that it wouldnt be an automatic backup causing the problem...
Also, ive enslaved the only extra-terrestrials ive ever met, so they better not be just screwing with me. They have a lot of cooking and cleaning to do.
Thanks for giving it a loook...and if you have any more ideas keep em coming.
